Your weekly fix of show tunes!
Front Row Centre places you in the best seats in the house for songs from the musicals of Broadway, Hollywood, London and Toronto. Current shows, classic Broadway hits and fabulous flops are showcased. Guests pop by to share their favourite show tunes and talk about local productions.
Mark Andrew Lawrence has always been interested in theatre and collecting original cast recordings. "The collection," he says "now includes over 3,000 items from antiques to the latest Cd's and MP3 files. Radio always had an appeal. "I grew up listening to CHFI when Michael Compeau was its program director. They had a Sunday afternoon program called Front Row Centre featuring Broadway cast recordings." By the age of 9 Mark Andrew had already figured out what he wanted to do when he grew up.
He began his career in radio as the music director of St. Catharines radio station CHRE-FM. After five years there, Mark Andrew accepted a position with fledgling classical station CFMX-FM. The program director was none other than Michael Compeau!
Under Compeau's tutelage, Mark Andrew learned about programming classical music, but more importantly how to be an announcer. "Michael always wanted us to talk to the listeners, not at them."
The friendship continued right up until Compeau's death in 2005. "I told him I was setting up my own company to syndicate theatre reviews to local newspapers, magazines and radio stations and that I was calling it Front Row Centre as a tribute to him and the program inspired me to go into radio. He was very pleased."
Mark Andrew is Toronto theatre reviewer for Expose Entertainment Magazine, The Sondheim Review, The North York Mirror, Mississauga News, Oakville Beaver, City Centre Mirror, www.broadwayworld.com, and 88.5 The Jewel. Now Front Row Centre is part of the Sunday Morning line-up on PROUD FM.
